Tracking patient adjustment when in BC Cancer Agency Care

The process of being diagnosed with cancer and going through lengthy, often aversive treatments is very emotionally demanding. Remarkably, we do not know very much about how patients’ feelings change over time and which psychological and disease specific factors account for such changes in psychological well-being.

The Tracking patient adjustment project follows cancer patients through the first year of their care at the BC Cancer Agency beginning at the time point of diagnosis, and assesses a number of factors related to emotional distress.

Status: recruitment is complete. All data should be collected and ready for analysis by November 2011.

Tracking patient improvement when in the Patient and Family Counseling
Service

Patients with cancer sometimes need professional support to deal with their cancer diagnosis and treatment, and they may have received these services through Patient and Family Counseling (PFC) at the BC Cancer Agency. It is unclear at this time which type of patient benefits most from which type of intervention.

The Patient and Family Counseling study follows a subsample of highly distressed cancer patients who have accessed psychosocial support services at the BC Cancer Agency, assessing changes in emotional distress and related factors.

Status: currently in recruitment phase
